UNBROKEN MIRRORS: SELF-PORTRAITS CREATED BY GLOBAL YOUTH
These self-portraits were created by immigrant, refugee and asylum seeker high school youth. The students in these two projects were asked to look into a mirror before they began creating their self-portraits. What might it mean to any one of us to look into a mirror, one without any distortions that gives us back an image of ourselves; a mirror that messages our distinct beauty back to us?
SEENG OUR HUMANITY IN OURSLEVES & EACH OTHER
These self-portraits demonstrate how engaging in art can honor our cultural and personal identity especially if we are subject to language and laws that demean us, create false images and distort our perceptions of ourselves. We invite you to take your time with the words and images created by global youths and consider with great care how we might learn to embrace difference—by unbroken mirrors that allow us to see the humanity in
ourselves and each other.
WORD TRAVELS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & PARTNERSHIPS
We collaborate with other community and refugee and immigrant rights organizations sharing a mission of working toward a world where every young person can hold a paintbrush, a pen, a dream, a loved one’s hand and a lasting sense of safety, nourishment, security and belonging. We also partner with individual artists including our wonderful project visual artists Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys and graphic design artist Richard
Rogers.
