SUMMARY:Lawrence Hatter: The American Revolution's End and an Empire's Beginning
DESCRIPTION:When: April 18th\, 1pm \nWhere: Highline Heritage Museum Conference Room \nDescription: Could the American Revolution have been both a fight for human liberty—and for empire and dominance? \nExplore the strange duality of the Revolutionary War with historian Lawrence Hatter. Meet the Revolutionary War generation who won huge victories for universal human rights\, yet who conquered other humans for territory and treasure. Discover the Battle of Fallen Timbers\, where the U.S.’s victory over a Native confederacy led to its ongoing invasion of Indian Country. \nAs the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches\, how can we celebrate the Founders’ achievements while reconciling with this dissonant past? \nBio: Lawrence B. A. Hatter is an award-winning scholar and teacher of Colonial and Revolutionary American history. A native of the United Kingdom\, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and currently serves as associate professor of History at Washington State University. He has been published in The Washington Post and TIME magazine. He also writes a regular column for Spokane’s The Inlander newspaper.

SUMMARY:Beyond Land Acknowledgements: Settler Stories\, Rematriation\, and Reimaging How We Think About Home with Dr. Natasha Varner
DESCRIPTION:Join historian Natasha Varner for a talk and workshop designed to explore the questions: How did we come to be settlers in the places we call home? How can we honor our ancestors while also acknowledging their complicity in systems of harm? And how can we move towards accountability and right relationships with the Indigenous peoples upon whose land we now live? Varner will deliver a brief talk about her own family’s settler history\, then guide participants through dialogue and writing/reflection exercises. Participants can expect to come away with a roadmap for continued reflection and action\, and connections with a community of people invested in doing the same work.\n\nBio:\nNatasha Varner\, PhD is a historian and writer whose essays and reporting have appeared in Electric Literature\, The Nation\, Atlas Obscura\, PRI’s The World\, Jacobin\, and The Abusable Past. Her first book\, “La Raza Cosmética: Beauty\, Identity\, and Settler Colonialism in Postrevolutionary Mexico\,” was a finalist for the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association’s Best First Book Award in 2021. Recent recognition of her work includes a Roundhouse Foundation artist residency\, a GAP Funding Grant from Artist Trust\, and an Us@250 journalism fellowship with New America. She currently serves as Heritage Program Manager at 4Culture. Learn more about Dr. Varner and her work at www.natashavarner.com.

SUMMARY:Rooted in White Center Documentary Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Free Film Screening – Rooted in White Center is a powerful testament to the deep-seated belonging of immigrants and refugees in the PNW. \nThe docuseries explore the evolution of White Center from its mid-century roots to its present. The docuseries is a collection of reflections from community leaders and nine personal narratives of refugee and immigrant business owners. The series is a powerful testament to the resilience\, creativity\, and enduring spirit of BIPOC\, immigrant and refugee-owned businesses navigating the pressures of life\, displacement\, and gentrification in our unincorporated\nKing County neighborhood. By documenting these narratives\, the series serves as both a legacy for the community and a call to action for equitable investment that honors White Center’s cultural roots. Produced by the White Center Community Development Association\n(WCCDA) as part of the White Center Innovation Project.

SUMMARY:A Musical Journey Celebrating 250 Years as a Country
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a musical journey celebrating our country’s 250th anniversary. We’ve selected\nsongs representing key historical events and eras:\n• The Early Years\, including the Revolutionary War Period\, the War of 1812\, and the 1837\nfinancial panic when many Americans faced hard times.\n• The California Gold Rush when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in 1848. The rush lasted\nuntil roughly 1855 bringing 300\,000 immigrants worldwide.\n• The Civil War from 1860 until 1865\, when brothers\, neighbors\, and friends sometimes fought\non opposite sides of the conflict\, ultimately putting an end to slavery and preserving our\nunion.\n• The Cowboy Years\, a 30-year period (roughly 1865–1895) when cowboys managed massive\nherds\, driving cattle across the Great Plains from Texas to Northern railroads.\n• The Railroad Era – The expansion of the US by railroads\, particularly between 1870 and 1900\,\nadded over 170\,000 miles of track\, transforming the nation into an industrial power by linking\nthe Atlantic and Pacific coasts.\n• The “Melting Pot” Era (roughly 1890s–1920s) characterized by massive immigration and the\nassimilation of diverse cultures into a cohesive American identity. This was eventually\nreplaced by the concept of multiculturalism or a “salad bowl” where cultures coexist rather\nthen blend into one.\n• Popular music in the early 20th century included Broadway music\, crooning vocalists\, and\ndance bands. Key influencers of this period were published sheet music\, the “radio boom\,”\nthe development of recording technology and widespread use of phonographs. The “Jazz\nAge” of the 1920s brought widespread popularity to dance music\, including the Charleston\nand fox trot.\n• Popular music from the 1950s\, 60s and 70s saw the emergence of Rock and Roll\, Folk Music\,\nand the use of Protest Songs to promote peace and social justice. \n  \nDon Jenkins performs in the Seattle area for the pure joy of making music for and\nwith friends and friends-to-be. He sings folk\, pop\, Celtic\, religious\, and country\nmusic\, covering such artists as Bob Dylan\, Gordon Lightfoot\, John Denver\, James\nTaylor\, Allison Krauss\, Bill Staines\, John Prine\, Iris DeMent\, Paul Simon\, The\nBeatles\, Emmylou Harris\, Kenny Loggins\, Dan Fogelberg\, Joni Mithell\, Jim Croce\,\nPete Seeger\, Hank Williams\, Sr.\, Steve Goodman\, George Strait\, Jimmy Buffett\,\nPaddy Reilly\, Liam Clancy\, Ian Tyson\, Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, and The Everly\nBrothers.\nDon has performed at the Northwest Folklife Festival for many years and is\nscheduled for this year’s festival on Saturday\, May 23rd at 4:00pm in the Cornish\nCourtyard at the Seattle Center.\nHe and a group of his friends\, known as The Stringers\, play regularly for the fun of\nit and also\, provide music for local churches and at private venues celebrating\nspecial occasions\, such as birthdays\, anniversaries\, and retirement parties.
