SUMMARY:Drag Culture: Beyond Entertainment
DESCRIPTION:Typically held at bars and nightclubs\, drag is a form of entertainment in which a performer uses clothing and makeup to impersonate a particular gender identity\, usually of the opposite sex. Yet drag is so much more than nightclub entertainment—it provides community\, instills self-confidence\, and can even save lives. \n  \nJoin drag king performer Ceasar Hart and explore the history of drag culture and why it is so important for many in the LGBTQ+ community. Discover the impact of this art form\, and how it can be used not only to raise awareness and advocate for LGBTQ+ acceptance\, but also as a powerful vehicle for individual self-expression. \n  \nCeasar Hart (he/him) has been a drag king performer in the Pacific Northwest for over a decade. Alongside graduating recently from Washington State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications\, he has produced his own drag shows in Grays Harbor and co-hosted stages for both Seattle Pride and Seattle PrideFest.

SUMMARY:Jewish Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop taught by Artist Rainer Adkins. \n Adkins is self-taught in Hebrew calligraphy\, lettering\, and other Jewish artistic traditions. He was raised with a strong sense of Jewish identity in a politically activist artistic household\, with connections always being made between heritage\, visual and other forms of art\, and work for justice. When he was asked to make a ketubah (calligraphed and decorated marriage vows) for a friend’s wedding\, he became determined to pursue self-directed intensive study of Hebrew calligraphy\, document illumination\, and Jewish art history. He has taught since 1980. \nIn Hebrew\, calligraphy is called k’tivah tamah\, meaning ‘miraculous writing’. Sofrut (scribal traditions) and illuminations have been integral to Jewish spiritual and cultural expression and the resilience of Jewish communities for centuries; they represent not only the long history of Judaism\, but calligraphy and illustrations could also be carried across borders in haste in times of terror. Parallel to the crafting of Torah scrolls and other sacred objects\, storytelling reflects the enormous role of Hebrew letters in Jewish life: in stories\, they exist before Creation. \n  \n
