This exhibit celebrates the life of Alan Hovhaness, composer and long-time SeaTac resident.
Inspired heavily by nature, Hovhaness claimed he stayed in the Highline area because of the spectacular mountain views from the windows of his home. Hovhaness composed more than 500 works – symphonies, operas, chamber pieces, and others, making him one of the most prolific composers of the 20th Century.
One of Hovhaness’ most famous works, Symphony No. 50, completed in 1982, was inspired by the 1980 eruption of Washington’s Mount Saint Helens. Other famous works by Hovhaness are The Prayer of St. Gregory, And God Created Whales, and Mysterious Mountain. Hovhaness spent almost thirty years of his life in the Highline area, having initially come here as composer-in-residence for the Seattle Symphony.
